“I grew up knowing Bill Russell was a great guy,” O’Neill said. “But I didn’t know until I talked to him how cool he is. He couldn’t stay in the same hotels as his (white) colleagues, people were writing harsh words to him. At the time, he never made that kind of money, but they never complained.”
“These conversations have taught me to be mentally strong, to never complain and never to be a crying child with everything at my disposal.”
O’Neill also spoke about a time he failed to purchase Russell memorabilia at auction. Russell put two of his championship rings, as well as his Hall of Fame ring among other things, on sale last year.
Shaq vowed to buy them all after hearing this. However, he came up short because he didn’t want to go through the entire bidding process.
“No, it’s too late,” O’Neill said. “I didn’t want to go through the auction process.” “I wanted to see who was in charge and make an offer you couldn’t refuse and buy everything. But they kept forcing me to go through this auction process and by the time (the auction catalog) arrived, and I picked my item numbers it was too late.”
