The only way for the Braves to get back to first place in the series was to win all five games – now that’s impossible!

The Mets made their opener last night 6-4 thanks to muscle and Edwin Diaz. Alonso’s house Vogelbach turned back as Naquin had his best game as the Met hit two homers. Diaz scored six saves to close the door! We’re pretty sure that means Diaz won’t be available tonight, but it does mean he’s fine for one of Saturday’s games.

Mets lineup

Brave lineup

The Mets have a real chance of pushing Atlanta a bit back in the standings to find success last night over the weekend. Taiguan Walker will be looking forward to doing it tonight on the hill. Over 18 starts and 103 1/3 innings, Walker has a 2.79 ERA, 3.35 FIP, 1,132 WHIP and 143 ERA+. In his last two starts, he allowed six runs over 11 2/3 innings (4.63 ERA) from 14 strokes and three runs.

Tonight will be Walker’s first start against the Braves this season. Last year, he made three starts for a total of 13 runs with a 3.46 ERA. The Braves have the following career numbers against him:

The Mets’ bats are looking to keep their attack alive against Ian Anderson tonight. Over 20 starts and 101 innings, Anderson has a 4.99 ERA, 4.23 FIP, 1.505 WHIP, and 85+ ERA. He also leads the league at 49 walks – a stat we hope the Mets who know how to count will not lose. There were four starts in July where Anderson was great. During those four starts, he allowed four runs over the course of 21 2/3 rounds. This includes his last start where he was not allowed to run and only hit over six innings against the Cardinals. However, on July 24, Anderson allowed seven runs of eight strokes in three rounds against the Angels. The vast majority of Anderson’s games this year fall into two categories. They were either great or terrible – very few between matches.

Anderson’s only start against the Mets this year was one of his best. The Mets have only held one run over 5 1/3 innings despite allowing five hits and walk fours. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

game notes

The Cardinals announced that they had called a player Kramer Robertson of concessions from the Mets. Robertson was active on the Mets but never entered a game.

The Empire State Building will serve as the scoreboard for the Mets game tonight. For five minutes after each run is scored for the Mets, the building’s tower lights will shine blue and orange and then revert to classic white. If the Mets win, the Empire State Building will turn on its lights in blue and orange for the rest of the evening.

Brett Bate, a prospective third baseman for the Mets, has been named the July MiLB Player of the Month for the Eastern Premier League. Patty hit .365/.435/.688 and led the league in home runs (eight) and RBI (27).

Let’s go Mets!
