49ers news: Chris Foerster thinks Mike McGlinchy’s extra weight in 2021 has hurt him as a player

How many in the past three seasons? San Francisco 49ers“The correct handling of Mike McGlinche’s weight has been an important talking point. Offensive coach Chris Foerster shared his thoughts on the matter, believing that McGlinche’s weight was not the root of his problems.

Forster never understood why people raised McGlinche’s weight only as a problem in the passing game. Instead, McGlinchey described him as one of the best running blockers in the league who often knocks out an opponent’s defense line:

I didn’t think it was so light. It’s the implementation and the basics. You are 300 pounds. They (strength and conditioning personnel) know better than me. How they feel, from the strength coaches and nutrition crew, is beyond my address.

I know if you put your hands in the right place and played with a pillow level… I didn’t look at Mike McClinchy on his running game and said he’s too light. It kicks people out. He is one of the best running blockers in the NFL. It is a great deterrent.

In fact, I think being overweight hurts him a bit. There is a level where the player must feel comfortable. You have to compete. You have to feel powerful. And in that position, it’s a huge man’s game. So maybe that 10-15 pounds feels light in the pants. So maybe that’s how he felt.

I still say half the time I felt like, you weren’t doing your basics right, which is why you feel like that. If you have more weight… Trent Williams gets away with some things that are as big, strong, and physical as he is. He may be lacking in technique and he is just… Ergh.. [buzzer sound] He stops there only because he trent.

When you’re lighter, it puts a premium on technology.

McGlinchey on Wednesday mentioned how he came to his weight before Covid. McGlinchey’s weight has fluctuated everywhere over the past few seasons. In 2020, he gained 290 pounds. Last year, he was close to 315 pounds, which felt pretty high. Now, it’s somewhere in the 305-pound range. He explained why:

I think as far as the production I got last year, I still feel like I can do things a little better. I’m back to playing the weight I always played with. This is where I played my best since I was 18 and 19 and this is where I will stay. I feel like I’m moving faster, more explosive, stronger, and all of those things. All those clichés you want me to spit out now.

The 49ers are careful not to rush McGlinchey to get back into things too quickly, as he got plenty of time and rest during the first week of camp.

It would be hard to find a stronger competition for McGlinchey than Nick Bosa, who opposed him in the first place. These two had their fair share of entertaining fights. Bossa beat McGlinchy for his bags, but Mike’s thigh threw Kai to the floor on one impressive rep.

Above all else, McGlinche needs to stay healthy for this offense to work. McGlinchey played full seasons in 2018 and 2020 while missing matches in both 2019 and 2021. If history repeats itself, Trey Lance will protect throughout 2022.
